Best Affordable AI Chatbot for Shopify

A one-person store does not need a helpdesk bill that grows with every chat.

You typed “best affordable AI chatbot for Shopify” because you run the store yourself. You want a cheap chatbot without per-ticket fees, and you will not hire a support person this year.

A free chat widget is not an AI chatbot. The widget is a box on the product page. An AI chatbot answers the size, shipping, and return questions that keep coming back, so you do not type the same reply again. The cheap sticker is not the cheap year.

Per-ticket and per-resolution fees are a trap when you will not hire. The month chats spike, the bill spikes, and you still have no person for the peak. Shopify Inbox is the $0 start. YourGPT is the paid budget pick: a flat plan, Shopify data, no per-ticket fee.

  • Shopify Inbox: $0. Shopify’s app. Enough while you still answer chat.
  • YourGPT: $39 a month billed annually on Essential. Flat plan. Shopify connector on every plan. No per-ticket fee.
  • Tidio: from $24.17 a month on annual billing, then Lyro and Flows as separate meters.
  • Gorgias: from $40 a month, then per-ticket and per-automation fees.
  • eesel: $0.40 per ticket or chat. No monthly floor on self-serve. The bill is the volume.

Who this is for

You run a Shopify store as one person or a small team. Indiecity is for one person or a team under twenty. You run lean. You will not hire a support person this year, and you would rather keep the company under twenty than build a support department.

Leave if you already run a staffed helpdesk and you want a full support suite. That stack is for a team with a lead. You need a bill that stays flat, not a platform for a support team.

What affordable means

Affordable means you can name the monthly bill before chats spike, and the bill keeps the same shape when they do. Run these three tests on any chatbot page.

  1. Can you name the monthly price from the public pricing page before you talk to sales?
  2. If chats triple for one month, does the bill stay the same shape, or do you pay per ticket or per resolution?
  3. Can one person install it, train it on your policies, and read the handoff without a support lead?

Inbox still comes first. Paid AI comes after you can name the three questions you already answer by hand.

Start with Shopify Inbox

Shopify Inbox is Shopify’s own app. The App Store lists it as Free. As of September 2026 it rates 4.6 from 5,798 reviews. The listing calls it “An AI sales associate that knows your customers.”

  • Buyers can ask questions and get help finding products.
  • Inbox connects to your catalog, inventory, and policies automatically.
  • You set the tone, style, and rules.
  • You can run Inbox with the agent or without it.
  • Built-in analytics cover orders assisted and buyer satisfaction.

The same listing also has complaints. A Twist Of Date wrote on 1 September 2026 that the latest update made contact drop and the start-chat form too heavy. Forestwest AU, edited 25 August 2026, stopped using Inbox because they could not follow up if the customer left no email or phone. They wrote the problem was solved on 26 August 2026, and they came back.

Inbox is enough when you can still answer the queue yourself. When the same questions repeat faster than you type, Inbox is no longer enough as your only tool. Paid AI is next. The expensive part of that bill is the per-ticket fee.

Per-ticket fees are the expensive part

Gorgias’s pricing page starts at $40 a month. Starter is monthly billing only. That $40 is Helpdesk at $10 a month for 50 tickets plus AI Agent at $30 a month for 30 automated interactions ($10 + $30 = $40). Past the ticket limit you pay $0.40 per ticket. Past the AI limit you pay $1.50 per automated interaction.

  • Basic annual: $77 a month ($924 billed annually) for 300 tickets and 30 automated interactions ($50 + $27 = $77). Then $0.40 per ticket over and $1.50 per automated interaction over.
  • Pro annual: $471 a month ($5,652 billed annually) for 2,000 tickets and 190 automated interactions ($300 + $171 = $471). Then $0.36 per ticket over and $1.50 per automated interaction over.

When you use Gorgias, you are charged a fee for each ticket replied to from your helpdesk, plus an additional outcome-based fee (on top of your ticket fee) for conversations successfully automated by AI Agent.

The same docs say an automation fee and a ticket fee may apply to the same ticket when AI Agent resolves it without a human. Both meters can run on one conversation.

eesel’s pricing page has no platform fee and no monthly minimum on self-serve. A regular task (a support ticket or a chat session) is $0.40. A heavy task (a blog draft) is $4.00. Light dashboard Q&A is free. Their own table is the ticket count times $0.40.

  • 100 tickets: 100 × $0.40 = $40
  • 500 tickets: 500 × $0.40 = $200
  • 1,000 tickets: 1,000 × $0.40 = $400
  • 2,500 tickets: 2,500 × $0.40 = $1,000

If 1,000 tickets cost $400, four times that volume is four times the bill, because the unit is the ticket. eesel gives $50 of free usage with no card. Agents pause when you hit the usage limit. An annual commit can save 25%. Enterprise adds a $1,000 a month platform fee on top of usage.

That is why people search for a Shopify chatbot without per-ticket fees. The budget pick keeps Shopify data and a flat monthly plan.

The budget pick is YourGPT

The YourGPT homepage
yourgpt.ai

Gorgias and eesel bill when tickets or tasks pile up. You pay a YourGPT plan, not a per-ticket fee. It is a no-code AI agent platform. The Shopify connector is on every plan, with no extra integration fee. You still need an active YourGPT subscription and an active Shopify subscription.

You are not hiring someone to retype the same three answers. The agent uses your store data. It guides shoppers, shares order updates, and answers the shipping and policy questions you already answer by hand. You connect the store. You do not write an app.

YourGPT is already the support seat in 10 best AI tools for a micro SaaS. On a store, that job is catalog questions and order questions.

What it does on a Shopify store

After you connect Shopify, YourGPT’s integration page says the assistant can read products, variants, inventory, order information, and store policies. Shoppers can look up order status, check shipping, and start a return in the chat. It can recommend products from your catalog. You add the widget in the theme. You can change colors, the window, and the avatar. The same page says the Shopify integration allows up to 500 conversations at the same time.

Adding products to the real cart from chat is a separate setup. Open Functions → AI Copilot Actions → Shopify. YourGPT’s Shopify Copilot article says the five actions need Agent Mode and turn on together. Functions is a Professional line item. Essential does not list it.

  • Search Products: the agent looks up the catalog by keyword.
  • Display Products: cards with image, title, brand, and price. Add goes to the real cart. A tap opens the product view.
  • Product Details: looks up variants.
  • Add to Cart: a typed add asks for confirmation. A button add is instant. Out of stock is marked.
  • View Cart: quantities, a total, and Checkout into real checkout.

You train it from the options on YourGPT’s pricing FAQ: a website link, a sitemap, a Help Center, Notion, YouTube, or an upload (CSV, TXT, PDF, DOCX, PPTX, or MD). Hit ReIndex, or set a schedule. Training usually finishes in a few minutes.

What it costs

YourGPT prices a plan, not a ticket. As of September 2026, Essential is $39 a month billed annually, or $59 monthly. Professional is $79 a month billed annually, or $129 monthly. Advanced is $349 a month billed annually, or $499 monthly. Enterprise is a custom yearly contract.

  • Essential: 2 chatbots, 200 webpages, 20 documents, 10 million AI credits, monthly content update, 3 team members, unlimited integrations.
  • Professional: 5 chatbots, 500 webpages, 100 documents, 30 million AI credits, Chatbot Studio, API and webhook support, GPT-4 access, Functions, 5 team members, AI Helpdesk, escalate to human agent, all integrations.
  • Advanced: 10 chatbots, 2,000 webpages, 500 documents, 100 million AI credits, weekly content update, 20 team members, custom branding, custom domain, custom roles, and an account manager.

There is no extra charge per message. You pay for the AI credits you consume. Each plan has a credit limit, not a message limit. Credit use depends on the model. The pricing FAQ lists GPT-3.5 at 1x, GPT-4o-mini at 0.5x, GPT-4o at 5x, GPT-4 Turbo at 10x, and GPT-4 at 20x. You get emails at 50%, 70%, and 100% of the pool. YourGPT’s pricing calculator lists extra credits at $7 per 2 million.

The Shopify integration page says the assistant can transfer a conversation to your team with context. The plan table still lists “Escalate to Human agent” on Professional, not on Essential. Credits run out. This is not a full Gorgias helpdesk. You still answer the messy tickets.

What YourGPT is not

Skip YourGPT if you want a full ecommerce helpdesk with voice, SMS, and revenue attribution. That is Gorgias. YourGPT is an AI agent, a widget, and Shopify actions.

You install the widget by editing the theme. YourGPT’s Shopify docs say to copy the script from YourGPT Integration, then in Shopify Admin open Online Store → Themes → Edit code → Layout/theme.liquid, paste it, and Save. The Shopify integration page also has you connect the store, enter the store URL, and sync products and customers through webhooks.

Credits run out. The pricing FAQ says you buy add-ons when you hit the limit. Cheaper models use fewer credits. Heavier models cost more credits. This is not unlimited chat.

You still write shipping, returns, and sizing yourself. If those pages are three vague sentences, the bot has nothing true to say. Human escalation is listed on the Professional plan. Chargebacks, damaged goods, and an angry VIP stay with you. That is the point of no-hire: the bot takes repeats so you can take exceptions.

Hiring is a later decision, not the chatbot decision. Read when to hire your first employee when exceptions become a job. For the tickets you still answer yourself, use how to turn support emails into paying customers.

When to pick something else

These are jobs, not a scored top eight. This guide does not cover every chatbot in the Shopify App Store.

Stay on Inbox

Stay on Shopify Inbox if you can still answer chat yourself. It is free and first-party.

Gorgias, if you already need a helpdesk

Pick Gorgias when you already need a helpdesk and you will pay per ticket. It is a Shopify-native helpdesk with an AI Agent. You buy ticket plans, and AI is billed per automated interaction. It is built as one inbox for a staffed ecommerce team. Skip it as the budget AI layer.

Tidio, if you want a chat suite

Pick Tidio if you want live chat, ticketing, and AI in one suite and you will count three meters before you buy: billable conversations, Lyro conversations, and Flows visitors. It is not the simplest flat bill.

Starter is $24.17 a month on annual billing for 100 billable conversations. Growth starts at $49.17 a month on annual billing from 250 billable conversations. Plus starts at $300 a month, then adds monthly usage. The Lyro AI Agent add-on starts at $32.50 a month from 50 Lyro conversations. Tidio also has a free plan. On the compare table, the first 50 Lyro conversations are free (lifetime).

A billable conversation is a thread with a human agent message. Lyro replies and Flows replies do not count as billable conversations. Tidio lists native Shopify actions on the pricing feature grid. Tidio claims you can “Solve up to 67% of customer problems with Lyro.” That is Tidio’s claim.

eesel, if you refuse to migrate

Pick eesel if you already live in Zendesk, Freshdesk, or Gorgias and you refuse to migrate. It charges $0.40 per regular task (a ticket or a chat). You layer it on the helpdesk you already have. It is not the no-hire budget pick. A busy month is a bigger bill. Their table puts 1,000 tickets at $400.

Pick in one sitting

You already know the job of each tool. Pick one before you leave the desk.

  1. Write the three questions you answer every day: where is my order, returns, and sizing or shipping. If you cannot name three, stay on Shopify Inbox and keep answering.
  2. Open the public pricing page for the tool you still want (YourGPT, Gorgias, Tidio, or eesel). Write the monthly number. Write what happens if chats triple. If you cannot write those two lines without a sales call, skip that tool.
  3. Ask whether the bot can see Shopify products, inventory, and order status. If the page only says “embed a widget”, it is not a Shopify chatbot. YourGPT’s Shopify page lists products, inventory, and order status.
  4. Ask whether a resolved chat bills a ticket or a resolution. If yes, it is not the no-hire pick.
  5. Decide Inbox only, YourGPT (flat AI), Tidio (chat suite with three meters), Gorgias (helpdesk), or eesel (layer on a helpdesk you already pay for).

Write the name on a line. If the name is YourGPT, install it this week.

This week

If you picked Inbox, stay on Inbox. If you picked Gorgias, Tidio, or eesel, use that vendor’s own install. The steps below are YourGPT.

Connect the store on YourGPT’s Shopify integration. Click Connect, enter your store URL, and sync products and customers.

Then put the widget on the storefront. Use YourGPT’s Shopify install guide for the clicks.

  1. Copy the widget script from the YourGPT Integration section.
  2. In Shopify Admin, go to Online Store, then Themes, then Edit code. Open Layout / theme.liquid, paste the script, and Save.

Train the bot on a website, a sitemap, a help center, or files. YourGPT’s pricing FAQ lists those sources. Cart actions sit under Functions → AI Copilot Actions → Shopify and need Agent Mode. YourGPT lists Functions on Professional. On Essential, skip cart actions. Test order lookup and policy questions first.

Run the week in this order.

  1. Day 1: Write the three questions and the real policy answers. Put them on a page or a PDF.
  2. Day 2: Create the YourGPT bot. Train on that page, shipping, returns, and the catalog connection.
  3. Day 3: Paste the widget. Place one test order and ask “where is my order” as a customer. If you are on Professional, turn on Shopify Copilot actions.
  4. Day 4: Ask a sizing, shipping, or return question. Fix whatever it gets wrong by editing the source page, then reindex in the dashboard.
  5. Day 5: Set handoff if you are on Professional (escalate to human). Read every transcript this week. Do not turn it loose on refunds you have not written a rule for.

YourGPT is the affordable AI chatbot for a Shopify store that will not hire and will not pay per ticket. Shopify Inbox remains the $0 start.

If you ran the week and you will put your name on the ticket count and the bill, send the draft.

FAQ

Questions people get stuck on

What is the best affordable AI chatbot for Shopify?

YourGPT, if you run the store yourself and you will not pay per ticket. Essential is $39 a month billed annually. The Shopify connector is on every plan and has no extra integration fee. Shopify Inbox is the $0 start while you can still answer chat yourself.

Is Shopify Inbox enough?

Yes, while you can still answer the queue. Inbox is Shopify’s own app and it is free. The App Store listing (4.6 from 5,798 reviews as of September 2026) says it can help shoppers find products and that it connects to catalog, inventory, and policies. When the same three questions repeat faster than you type, add a paid AI layer.

How much does a Shopify chatbot cost in 2026?

Inbox is $0. YourGPT Essential is $39 a month billed annually, or $59 monthly. Tidio Starter is $24.17 a month on annual billing, then Lyro and Flows are separate meters. Gorgias Starter is $40 a month for 50 tickets and 30 automated interactions, then overage. eesel is $0.40 per ticket or chat, with no monthly floor on self-serve.

What is a per-ticket fee?

A charge each time a conversation counts as a ticket, a task, or an automated resolution. Gorgias bills helpdesk tickets and can add an automation fee on the same ticket when AI Agent resolves it. eesel bills $0.40 per regular task. The month chats spike, the bill spikes.

Can I get a Shopify chatbot without per-ticket fees?

Yes. Inbox has no ticket meter. YourGPT prices a monthly plan plus AI credits. There is no extra charge per message. You buy more credits if the pool runs out. That is a different shape of bill than $0.40 or $1.50 every time the bot works.

Will an AI chatbot replace hiring support?

No. It takes the repeats: where is my order, returns, sizing, shipping. Chargebacks, damaged goods, and an angry VIP stay with you. Hire later, when exceptions are a job. The chatbot decision is not the hiring decision.

Does YourGPT read Shopify orders and products?

Yes. YourGPT’s Shopify page says the assistant can use products, variants, inventory, order information, and store policies. Shoppers can look up order status, check shipping, and start a return. Cart actions (search, product cards, add to the real cart) need Agent Mode and Functions, which YourGPT lists on Professional.

Which YourGPT plan do I need for a Shopify store?

The Shopify connector is on every plan. Essential ($39 a month billed annually) covers a trained bot, the widget, and the store connection. Professional ($79 a month billed annually) lists Functions, Chatbot Studio, and escalate to human. Pick Professional if you want cart actions in chat and a documented handoff.

What if I already use Gorgias or Zendesk?

If you already live in that helpdesk and you refuse to migrate, eesel layers AI on top at $0.40 per task. If you want one Shopify inbox for a staffed team and you will pay per ticket, stay on Gorgias. Neither is the no-hire budget pick.
